Overview
The Marine Conservation Program at Waikiki Dive Center integrates the Citizen Scientist Diver Program and the Marine Conservation AI Technologies Program. It is an innovative initiative that combines marine biology, conservation science, emerging technologies, and hands-on field experience to equip participants with practical skills while advancing meaningful marine stewardship throughout Hawaiʻi.
As marine ecosystems face increasing pressures from climate change, pollution, habitat degradation, and disease, new technologies are becoming essential tools for conservation professionals. This program introduces participants to the emerging intersection of marine science and artificial intelligence, where large-scale environmental datasets can be transformed into actionable insights for conservation and resource management through refined machine learning.
Objectives & Deliverables
Through classroom instruction, fieldwork, and hands-on technology applications, participants will learn how data collected by divers can contribute to cutting-edge conservation and research, and will be able to deliver:

Citizen Scientist Diver
Overview
The Marine Citizen Scientist Diver Program is a unique educational experience that combines advanced scuba diving skills with marine science, conservation, and citizen science methodologies.
Designed for divers who want to expand their knowledge both above and below the surface, this program bridges the gap between recreational diving and meaningful environmental stewardship. Participants develop stronger diving competencies while gaining a deeper understanding of Hawaiʻi’s marine ecosystems and the scientific principles used to study and protect them.
Throughout the program, participants receive training in advanced diving techniques, buoyancy control, underwater navigation, scientific observation, and environmental monitoring. These practical diving skills are complemented by engaging classroom sessions covering marine biology, coral reef ecology, conservation science, species identification, photogrammetry, and emerging marine technologies.
Objectives
- 🪸 Understand Coral Reef Ecology: Develop a strong understanding of coral reef ecosystems, marine biodiversity, and conservation principles.
- 🤿 Advanced Diving Skills: Improve buoyancy, navigation, observation, and underwater survey techniques while conducting conservation-focused dives.
